Elizabeth Prentiss 1818-78
This American author wrote books that are cheerful in tone and offer some really helpful ideas to parents about the stages of a small child's social, spiritual, physical, and psychological development. Little Susy's Six Birthdays shows how appropriate gifts and celebrations help Susy and her brother to enjoy these occasions:it is on her fifth birthday that Susy receives a dollhouse made by her father, and is encouraged to share it with her brother (who is small enough to climb inside it), Little Susy's Six Teachers and Little Susy's Little Servants (both 1856) show children happily learning about spiritual resources while they also discover the uses of their own eyes, ears, fingers and toes. Prentiss later became well known for her adult fiction, especially Stepping Heavenward (1869). |
